Joseph Avila

Born in 1990 in San Cristobal (Venezuela), Joseph Avila is active in the Viennese music scene with projects ranging from Lied and Chamber Music to Pop-Rock, Theater and Audiovisual Arts.
Highlights of the upcoming season include George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with the Mödlinger Symphonisches Orchester under Daniel Auner, Jeunesse Start Up! Vorkonzert at the Wiener Musikverein with the Tocuyito Trio and staged performances for the Triolino-Zyklus in several Austrian cities with Bululú (duo with violinist Dalina Ugarte, Scholarship recipients for the Jeunesse Masterclass for Young Audiences 2021).
Based in Vienna since 2010, he studied with Lilya Zilberstein and Ferhan Önder, as well as in the Lied Class of Markus Hadulla at the University for Music and Performing Arts. He began his musical studies with Liliana Fleites in his hometown, where he debuted as a soloist with the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra at the age of 13, and later moved to Caracas and went on to win several National Competitions and to study at the National University of Arts and at the Mozarteum Caracas Music School in the classes of Igor Lavrov and Carlos Urbaneja, respectively. He’s been distinguished with the mentorship and support of legendary musicians such as Dora Schwarzberg and Norman Shetler.
He’s a founding member of the Tocuyito Trio, focused on Venezuelan repertoire and folk music, and since 2018 part of the Yehudi Menuhin “Live Music Now” Foundation; and co-founder of the “Outta Tune” Crossover Concert-Series in Vienna. He has performed at the Aspen Music Festival (USA), the Vitebsk Philarmonie Festival for Contemporary Music (Belarus), the Giovani Concertisti Perugia (Italy), the Festival Été Musical à Bergerac (France) and the Sommerkonzerte im Stift Melk, the Beethoven Festival, and the Franz-Schubert-Institut in Baden (Austria), among others.
