Violoncello

Urh Mrak is a cellist with a broad interest and a fresh approach towards different styles of classical as well as contemporary music.

He received his first music education at the age of 6, when he was 14 years old he was accepted to the Conservatory for Music and Ballet in Ljubljana where he studied cello for four years in the class of Milan Hudnik. After that he was accepted to Royal Academy of Music in London. Currently he is a student at MDW (Musik und Darstellende Kunst Universität Wien) in Vienna under prof. Bruno Weinmeister. In September 2019 he graduated his Bachelor degree and in February 2022 his Masters degree, both with distinction in the class of Bernard Naoki Hedenborg. With his newly formed Rubik Quartet he is currently studying a Masters degree of Chamber Music at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich under the guidance of Quatuor Ébène.

He regularly takes part in seminars with world leading professors such as Robert Nagy, Franz Bartolomey, Sebastian Bru, Torleif Thedéen, Thomas Grossenbacher, Thomas Demenga, David Gregorian, Igor Mitrovic, Milos Mlejnik, etc. Since November 2014 he has been a regular substitute in Carinthian Symphony Orchestra. He also regularly performs solo recitals and chamber music concerts in Europe. In February 2015 he had a recital in London and in February 2016 in Namur in Belgium. In February 2017 in Pordenone, Italy and in September 2019 a chamber music concert in Vienna State Opera with Vienna Philharmonic Sommer Academy members to only mention a few. In April 2016 he had a solo concert with Alpe-Adria Youth Orchestra and in June 2016 with Carinthian Symphony Orchestra where he performed Cello Concerto from Antonin Dvorak. In January 2020 he performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Orchestra of the Private Music University of Vienna (MUK). 

He is a recipient of multiple Scholarships two of which are: Part-scholarship of Royal Academy of Music and Academic Excellence Scholarships of Music and Art Private University of Vienna. He took part in Vienna Philharmonic Summer Academy in Salzburg in Summer of 2019 and regularly performs with chamber music groups and chamber orchestra of the Vienna Philharmonic Sommer Academy. From December 2021 until May of 2022 he was a member of Tonkünstler Orchester. He recently won the audition for a tutti position in Iceland Symphony Orchestra and will start to work with the ISO in September 2022.
